"Joanna's voice is an audible red light that commands you to stop whatever you were doing and just listen to her sing."
-Christopher Porter, A2 Pulp Magazine
Joanna Sterling is a folk/pop songstress hailing from Ann Arbor, Michigan. Armed with an arresting voice, and a command of melody sharper than Artemis' arrow, Sterling is captivating hearts with every midwest listening room appearance. Imagine the spiritual successor of 90's Lilith Fair artists like Sarah McLachlan and Tori Amos, surrounded by the lush orchestral chamber pop arrangements of artists like Damien Rice and Bon Iver. After a handful of years playing the midwest singer/songwriter circuit and headlining Pride Festivals as frontwoman of Joanna & the Jaywalkers, Joanna Sterling now embodies her human and musical growth by performing under her own name. Whether appearing solo or flanked by virtuosic string players Anthony Marchese, Adam Har-Zvi and Lauren Pulcipher (and backing vocalist Mel Clark), the tightly wound common thread of her performances is always an ethereal voice telling the truth. Sterling's forthcoming debut "Queen of Wands" packages this truth with the humane but steady hand of a wisdom figure twice her age. These are tales of love and loss, the insights of a practicing psychotherapist, the murmured rituals of a Tarot reader, the triumphant LGBTQ+ anthems of a trans woman emboldening marginalized voices by giving us her own. "Queen of Wands" was produced by fellow Michigan folk auteur Chris DuPont, and features the collaborative minds of some of the Midwest's finest players. It is available on all streaming platforms.
